The Sports Hub, Trivandrum better known as Greenfield International Stadium(formerly known as the Trivandrum International Stadium) is a pole star and a multi-purpose Stadium that is the most happening venue for the all the greatest of any sport or game even though the main purpose and pride of the venue are hosted for international cricket and football matches here. The playing arena in the stadium has been constructed on par with the FIFA regulations and International Cricket Council norms and believe it or not it has a whopping seating capacity for 50,000 spectates.
The stadium has been demarcated into four zones, where the north zone is dedicated for cricket, the east zone for football, each zones consisting of a players’ lounge, gymnasium, media centre and stock room. Shopping malls and a food court are placed in the south zone as per convenience. The adjoining pavilion accommodates the latest facilities for squash, volleyball, basketball, table tennis and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
The stadium also beholds the title of the first eco-friendly stadium in India and has been commended the builders for the go-green initiatives taken so far. It was also the first stadium build on the DBOT(design, build, operate, and transfer) basis and is also the first and foremost stadium in the country developed on annuity mode.
Some cannot be not mentioned facts about the stadium are:-
The first international match here was a Saaf football match that was between India and Mali in 2015 which India won, followed by the second winning match by India with score 2-1.
The first International cricket match was when India also was on the winning side against New zealand in 2017, followed by the India vs Windies which happened to be on India’s favour as well. Altogether making it the lucky ground for the country with tasting 0 losses here in the stadium.
It is not an always a familiar scenario to watch sports venue going deadlocked against infrastructure from other parts of the world. But this is exactly what the Sports hub Trivandrum where the Greenfield International stadium dwells, has achieved remarkable success at very recently.
The stadium in Kariavattom was nominated for David Vickers Award for New Venue of the Year in the Stadium Business Awards 2016, along with the likes of the well known home of French football club Olympique Lyonnais, known as Parc Olympique Lyonnais and T-mobile Arena in Nevada, US and invariably emerged as the winner.
It was a very staunchly contested category with international entries but “this first privately funded stadium in the Indian subcontinent with world class sports facility and also a development model for future, has become the stout winner” said the judging panel, making proud the natives inside the country and internationally as well.
